RISE Program Summary

The Reaffirming and Increasing Scholastic Endeavors (RISE) Program is a partnership between the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the Caltech Y and the Pasadena Unified School District that seeks to help low income students of the Pasadena, CA area become better college applicants through a series of intense tutoring sessions and a variety of events focusing on college information and preparation. With an average enrollment of 60 students per year and 25-30 tutors, RISE has been able to provide small group math and science focused tutoring on a weekly basis (total of 4 hours each week) as well as help students prepare for the California High School Exit Exam and the Scholastic Aptitude Test. Students in the program range from 8th grade to 12th grade and are referred to the program by their counselors or teachers based on academic need and eligibility for the Free and Reduced Lunch program at school. The RISE Program also sponsors college information seminars and panel discussions about the college entrance process in addition to several visits to local area colleges, including community colleges and public and private four year colleges.
