The Stanford College Outreach Program in Education (SCOPE) strengthens, enhances, and expands the academic preparation and college admissions component of the Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP). SCOPE builds on this highly successful 19-year-old program which offers academic enrichment pipeline programs that aim to diversify the health professions by offering educational enrichment in biological and medical sciences and college admissions support to low-income students historically underrepresented in colleges and universities. Specifically, SCOPE works to expose and familiarize very low-income and low-income ethnically diverse students to the college admission and financial aid processes as well as assist students with developing a competitive college portfolio that will include identifying and selecting colleges and universities that are a “best fit” for each student. Additionally, students work closely with professional academic and college success counselors to enhance their skills in preparing to take standardized college entrance exams (PSAT, SAT, ACT). SCOPE is offered in two formats – a 5-week summer residential university-based program and an academic year school-based program.
