Statement from Treasurer John Chiang on Gov. Jerry Brown’s Budget Proposal

SACRAMENTO – State Treasurer John Chiang today issued the following statement after Gov. Jerry Brown released his 2017-18 budget proposal:

"I applaud the Governor’s budget proposal for focusing on paying down debt and building up budgetary reserves in preparation for the next economic downturn and upheavals that will come from the change in federal administration.

"If it is true that budgets are a reflection of our values, then let us embrace a plan that uplifts our people, promotes job creation, and focuses on building infrastructure for generations of Californians. That budget must provide hope in these uncertain days following one of the strangest and most divisive presidential elections in memory. It must serve as a counter-point to a Trump presidency that denies the science underlying climate change, threatens to leave millions of Californians without vital healthcare access, defunds preventative and family planning services to low-income women, and undermines working families."
