California State Treasurer John Chiang Statement on Dick’s Sporting
Goods Decision to Stop Selling Assault-Style Weapons

Feb. 28, 2018

Contact: Marc Lifsher

SACRAMENTO -- “I commend Dick’s Sporting Goods’ decision to no longer sell military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazines.  In the wake of Parkland, Sandy Hook, and Columbine, it’s about time idle thoughts and prayers are replaced by courageous action and common sense.

“But while Dick’s Sporting Goods has grown sick of selling the preferred killing tools of mass murderers, too many other retailers are overly-consumed with shameless profiteering to see a rising body count.  If we want to stop the disturbing trend of school yards becoming killing fields, Californians must rise and insist that not one more nickel of taxpayer dollars nor another dime of teacher, firefighter, or public employee pension funds be invested in the proliferation of banned assault weapons."
