SACRAMENTO -- State Treasurer John Chiang today announced the appointment of Jovan Agee, a veteran legislative advocate, strategic coalition builder and community relations professional, as legislative director at the State Treasurer’s Office.

Agee has 15 years of government affairs experience, most recently serving as Capitol Director for former Assemblyman Sebastian Ridley-Thomas, a Los Angeles Democrat, where he established the assembly member’s legislative agenda and oversaw staff.

He also served as senior advisor to former Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson from 2015 to 2016, working on initiatives that included increasing funding allocated to minority-owned businesses.

The Sacramento Business Journal recently named Agee to its “40 Under 40” list of Sacramento regional achievers.

“My office has a long history of sponsoring successful legislation, ranging from affordable housing and banking reform to retirement security and health care access,” said Chiang. “Jovan is a seasoned pro who knows the importance of building relationships with community leaders, stakeholders, and lawmakers to pass my office’s most important initiatives.”

Agee said he is excited about his new post and humbled at the opportunity to work with the Treasurer and his staff.

“I look forward to strengthening the position of the State Treasurer’s Office as a leader in investments, banking and finance in California,” Agee said.

Earlier in his career, Agee worked as political and legislative director for the United Domestic Workers Union, Local 3930 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees. He was hired to build a political and legislative department that grew from one to 11 employees and saw its budget increase from $400,000 to $2.4 million during his tenure. He also led efforts to ensure home care workers in California could receive direct deposit and was part of a team that helped successfully raise the state’s minimum wage.

Agee serves as a strategic adviser and board member for several nonprofit organizations throughout California.

He graduated from California State University-Sacramento with a Bachelor of Arts in Government.
